The Maserati Ghibli: A Look Back as We Narrow In On the Future

October 27th, 2016 by

The Maserati luxury brand is one of the most prestigious automotive brands in the world. Rooted in Italian culture, class, and refinement, Maserati has been setting the highest standard for automotive luxury since 1914. Living up to its mission statement to, “Build ultra-luxury performance automobiles with timeless Italian style, accommodating bespoke interiors, and effortless, signature sounding power,” Maserati is easily the most exclusive car brand in existence. With only four models in the current lineup, Maserati is the perfect embodiment of when luxurious exclusivity, meets unparalleled confidence. The crowning jewel in the Italian automotive brand’s lineup is the timeless Maserati Ghibli.

Celebrating Half a Century of Luxury Performance

The Ghibli nameplate represents three different models in the Maserati lineup. The first of which was introduced to luxury car buyers in 1966 as a V8 Grand Tourer, the Maserati Ghibli has been exceeding expectations of luxury performance drivers from the moment it first appeared on dealer showroom floors. Named after a southwestern blowing desert wind, the Maserati Ghibli has delivered consistently powerful performance, steeped in the utmost of automotive luxury.

Let’s discover the rich and elusive history surrounding the Italian automaker’s flagship model, starting with the very first 1966 Ghibli, and ending with the newly redesigned 2017 Maserati Ghibli executive saloon.

  • Maserati Ghibli V8 Grand Tourer: As we touched on earlier, this was the first version of the now-iconic Ghibli model, which first became available in 1967. This two-door Grand Tourer debuted at the Turin Motor Show one year prior to its release, and was named as one of the Top Sports Cars of the 1960s, by Sports Car International magazine. Featuring a steel body construction with a low pointed front end nose, the first Ghibli model was powered by a front placed dry sump V8 engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Capable of reaching sixty miles per hour from a complete stand still in just 6.8 seconds, the 1967 Maserati Ghibli was a true on-track performer. Innovative pop-up headlamps, Italian leather sport seats, and high-end alloy wheels were the crowning features on this capable sports car. The first production run of the Maserati Ghibli was available as a convertible, coupe, and a super-charged SS. The 1969 Maserati Ghibli SS topped out at 174 miles per hour, making it the fastest road car ever produced by the Maserati luxury brand. Maserati halted the production of the Ghibli V8 Grand Tourer in 1973, when it was replaced by the Maserati Khamsin starting in 1974.
  • Maserati Ghibli V6 Twin-Turbo Coupe: The second rendition of Maserati’s luxury sports car was resurrected in 1992. After the Khamsin was removed from the luxury brand’s lineup, the Italian company made the decision to bring the Ghibli back for another chance. This two-door coupe featured seating for four passengers, and was powered by twin-turbo V6 engines. Once again making its debut at the Turin Motor Show, the Maserati Ghibli Coupe was built for luxury, just as much as it was for performance. With lush interior features like Connolly leather seating upholstery, and burl elm wood trim, the newest Maserati Ghibli Coupe appealed to more car buyers than the Grand Tourer was able to in its short-lived run on the automotive market. As much as it seemed that Maserati was finding its groove with luxury car buyers with the Ghibli twin-turbo coupe, it too eventually fizzled out of production after just five short years.
  • Maserati Ghibli Executive Saloon: By the time Maserati introduced the Ghibli executive saloon in 2013, it seemed that the Italian automotive brand had a much better understanding of what buyers in their niche segment were looking for. Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2013, the Maserati Ghibli Executive Saloon embodied the performance minded tradition of past models, but also incorporated the luxury stylings that the brand had perfected over the years. The introduction of this Ghibli model signified Maserati’s comeback to the luxury executive sedan segment, that it left over two decades prior to 2013. Offered as multiple variants since 2013, Maserati has managed to reach a greater number of luxury car buyers, who did not previously consider the Italian car brand as an option. To celebrate their one-hundred year anniversary, Maserati teamed up with the legendary Neiman Marcus, to create the ultimate Ghibli special edition. The 100th Anniversary Neiman Marcus Ghibli S Q4 was included in the car’s 2014 lineup, and stood out above every other offering from Maserati, and outdid other premium luxury car brands in a major way. Selling only 100 units of this limited edition Neiman Marcus Ghibli, Maserati was able to fetch an impressive $95,000 for each of these one of a kind sedans.

The Latest 2017 Maserati Ghibli

Keeping in step with the Italian automotive brand’s high-end luxury tradition, the latest 2017 Ghibli is everything premium buyers want, and so much more. Placing an enhanced emphasis on in-vehicle technology and connectivity, the 2017 Maserati Ghibli is more appealing to younger buyers than it has ever been in the past. Unlike past versions of this high-end luxury offering, the newest Ghibli has plenty of interior room to seat five passengers comfortably, and is available in three different trim levels. With a long list of standard luxury amenities and advanced performance features on even the most basic model, there is no wrong choice when it comes to buying the 2017 Maserati Ghibli. A powerful turbo-charged 3.0-liter V6 engine sits beneath the hood on the newest Ghibli, and delivers a heart pounding 345 horsepower rating, and 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

Whether opting for the Ghibli Base trim, the mid-range Ghibli S, or the high-end Ghibli S Q4, there is plenty to satisfy even the most distinct palette. Every luxury amenity, technology innovation, advanced safety system, and performance upgrade you can fathom, is made available on the 2017 Maserati Ghibli.
