Bracing for Bids on the Maserati Boomerang

The Boomerang is back, but not for long. This baby, born in 1971, is bound for auction in just a few short days.

If you’ve never heard of the Maserati Boomerang, you’ve got to check this out. Although it’s the only one of its kind, the Boomerang exemplifies the creative innovation that is Maserati, which you can find in other Maserati models on showroom floors at Maserati New York.

Between the Ghibli, Quattroporte, Gran Turismo, and Gran Turismo convertible, there are plenty of Maserati machines, all works of art in their own right, for you to appreciate. Before we share the specs on those, let’s take the Boomerang for an imaginary spin before someone outbids us and takes this treasure off the market for good.

The Birth of a Boomerang

In 1971, Maserati unveiled the Boomerang concept car at the Turin Motor Show. One year later, the brand brought the functional version of the Boomerang to the Geneva Motor Show, but unfortunately never sent it to the production line.

Designed by wonder kid, Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Boomerang was based on Maserati’s Bora, which Giugiaro also designed. Outfitted with a V8 engine, rated at 300 horsepower, the Boomerang swung around at speeds of 186 mph.

More noticeable than its speed, however, was the Boomerang’s dramatic design, a study in geometric angles and sharp lines.

Although the Boomerang was never actually a production vehicle for Maserati, it did inspire Giugiaro’s design of the Volkswagen Golf, as well as influence the BMW M1, DeLorean DMC-12, and the Lotus Espirit, among others.

Philip Kantor, the head of Bonhams European Motoring, which will auction the Boomerang at the Chantilly Sale on September 5, describes Giugiaro’s creation: “The Boomerang was the first car of its time to create such a strong, angular style statement. It’s considered to be one of the most remarkable designs of the 20th century and the ‘grandfather’ of the Volkswagen Golf Mk1.”

Bonhams is a privately owned auction house in England, and is among the oldest and largest of auctioneers world-wide.

Who was Giorgetto Giugiaro?

As a young artist, Giorgetto Giugiaro was discovered by Dante Giacosta, the Technical Director for Fiat. Blown away by Giugiaro’s artistic talents, Giacosta brought him on board at Fiat’s Styling Office.

Four years later, in 1959, Giugiaro became the manage of the Bertone Design Center, whose clients included Maserati – obviously, but also Jaguar, Ferrari, and Aston Martin.

It was this experience that influenced Giugiaro’s eventual creation of the Maserati Boomerang.

Kantor expects the pre-sale price of the Boomerang to rest somewhere around four million dollars, which sounds astronomical until you consider that this is the only car of its kind, and it’s still functional and road registered.

“It’s a unique, road registered concept car by the best car designer of the 20th century, so in comparative terms it’s very realistic.”

Just because it’s projected to start at that price doesn’t mean the final offer will be anywhere near there. This car would easily be the crown of any car collection and serious enthusiasts are surely in the process of determining how to outbid one another.

The 2015 Maserati Machines

There are currently eleven Maserati models on offer this year, and we have the specs on each one of them.

First Up, The Ghibli Twins

The 2015 Ghibli is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 engine, rated at 345 horsepower and reaching top speeds of 166 mph, the 2015 Ghibli sprints from zero to sixty mph in 5.5 seconds, and is priced to start at $69,800 for the base model.

Its sibling, the 2015 Ghibli S Q4 is even quicker, able to dash from zero to sixty mph in 4.7 seconds, thanks to its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, rated at 404 horsepower, able to reach top speeds of 175 mph. The Ghibli S Q4, with its added power and speed is more expensive than the Ghibli, at $77,900.

And, A Couple of Quattroportes…

For 2015, the Quattroporte comes with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, able to generate 404 horsepower, with top speeds measured at 176 mph. The 2015 Quattroporte zips from zero to sixty mph in 4.8 seconds and costs $106,900.

The faster and more powerful Quattroporte GTS, is priced higher at $140,500, and features a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, backed by 523 horsepower. Crushing the zero to sixty challenge in 4.4 seconds, the Quattroporte GTS boasts a top speed of 190 mph.

The Grand Turismo, Maserati’s Triplets

Actually, it’s really more like Turismo triplets when it comes to the Gran Turismo Sport, Gran Turismo MC, and Gran Turismo MC Centennial Edition, all equipped with a 4.7-liter V8 engine, which is supported by 454 horses, able to thunder their way from zero to sixty mph in 4.7 seconds, with top speeds returned at 185 mph. Depending on your preferred Turismo, expect to see stickers ranging from $132,825 and upwards of $165,600.

The Quadruplets – Maserati’s Gran Turismo Convertible

If a convertible is more your style, the 2015 Gran Turismo Convertible is a stunner, starting at $145,740 and powered by the same 4.7-liter V8 engine, but with ten few horses and a top speed of 177 mph. The Gran Turismo Convertible is still quick, zipping from zero to sixty mph in 5.1  seconds.

For $150,465, the 2015 Gran Turismo Convertible Sport is similarly equipped and boasts the same power and top speed, but is a tad quicker, flying from zero to sixty mph in 4.9 seconds.

Quicker and speedier, the 2015 Gran Turismo Convertible MC takes only 4.8 seconds and has top speeds measured at 180 mph, and is priced at $161,070.

Finally, the 2015 Maserati Gran Turismo Convertible MC Centennial Edition runs at 185 mph, passing the zero to sixty mph mark in a mere 4.7 seconds, with the help of 454 horses and priced at $182,009.
