2017 Maserati Levante – Albany, NY
As far as SUVs go, the market has never seen one like the 2017 Maserati Levante. This is a vehicle that has been crafted with exquisite detail, and exudes sophistication and luxury. Yet at the same time, it’s vehicle that poses a strength fostered by powerful and muscular curves. Overall, it’s an SUV that looks ready for experiences both on and off the road. Supporting the design’s claim, the powerful engine under the hood provides plenty of power for highway cruising and additional standard off-road components provide the Levante with its surprising all-terrain capability. Finally, the Levante will also feature some of the latest and greatest technology currently found in the 2016 model.
The Levante was designed with a two-fold purpose: to provide an awe-inspiring luxury experience, while also having enough power and performance to deliver an uncharacteristic shot of adrenaline to the SUV segment.

The name of the Levante is the name of a warm, Mediterranean wind that can change from a balmy breeze to destructive gale force in an instant; this is what the design of the 2017 Maserati Levante embodies.
Drawing inspiration from this legendary wind, Maserati gave the Levante a design that is just as unique and unpredictable. It has powerful muscular curves that ripple over the entirety of the vehicle, with the trident sitting large and proud in the grille — which is chrome-slotted and slightly curved inward. The headlights are lean and menacing, and follow the outward curve of the front quarter panels.
The hood has windswept ridges that create sharp angles, contributing to the stellar aerodynamics of the vehicle, as well as promoting that menacing look from the headlights. The sides have three intake ports, and are defined by two rigid slabs of muscle, which run back to meet a bulging rear-quarter panel. The top of the SUV is lower than average, creating a vehicle with a stout and wide stance. The hood gradually tapers off onto a spoiler, where a back-window with a sharp angle cuts down to meet the elongated taillights. It all comes together to create a design that is elegant and muscular, stout and lean, luxurious, yet intimidating.
On the engineering side of things, it’s also quite unique. In the SUV category, it gets the best aerodynamic efficiency and lowest center of gravity in its class. The wind drag coefficient is only 0.31, which leans more towards sedan territory, and the lowered center of gravity exists thanks to a perfectly balanced weight distribution of 50/50 between the front and rear of the vehicle. Therefore, the design is both practical and good-looking.
On the performance side of things, it looks like the 2017 Maserati Levante will be powered by one engine: a V6 twin-turbocharged gasoline engine. This engine comes with a couple of different “power settings,” the first one rated at 345 horsepower, and the second, 425 horsepower. Equipped with the 345 horsepower engine, the Levante is able to zip from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. With the 425 horsepower variant, it’s able to scream from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds — which is quite fast for an SUV. For those wondering, there is a diesel version available, but it won’t be available in the U.S.
Both engines come paired to an eight-speed automatic with the Q4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system. What makes this system intelligent and unique is its ability to instantly transfer torque between the axles when it’s required. That way, whether on or off the road, it’s able to have power where and when it needs it most.
Since Maserati decided to create this SUV, the brand has been pole-vaulted into the luxury market with vehicles like the Land Rover, and in order to survive, it needs to have some off-road capability. First, sporting the lowest center of gravity and a perfect 50/50 balance is worth it’s weight in gold when off-roading. Second, the ability to adjust the ride-height of the Levante is also extremely beneficial. This will allow the driver to keep the vehicle as low to the ground as possible when highway cruising, and raise it for more ground clearance during off-roading. On top of that, the Levante is also rumored to have high levels of torsional and flexible stiffness, which allows the Levante better articulation when going over hazardous terrain.
Rounding out the off-road performance, a mechanical self-locking rear differential comes standard, and will pair nicely with the Q4 intelligent AWD system, creating a combination that will ensure maximum traction and power to the wheels that need it at all times, regardless of the terrain.
As far as technology goes, the 2017 Maserati Levante provides an abundance of features to entertain, assist, and protect while going on or off the road.
On the inside, the star of the show is the evolution of the Maserati Touch Control system, which is the current infotainment system available in 2016 models. This system has been completely updated to offer much more functionality and convenience, and is operated on a 8.4-inch high-resolution touchscreen. If touchscreens don’t suit your fancy, then the system can also be controlled by the new rotary control feature.
There is a wide range of advanced driver assistance systems available as well, such as adaptive cruise control with automatic stop-start function, forward collision warning, automatic brake assist system, and lane departure warning. These are all found standard on the Levante, and are there to help avoid an accident. For example, the adaptive cruise control uses a radar system to detect the distance between the Levante and the car in front of it. So, if the vehicle in front slows down, the stop-start function will kick in to apply automatic brakes.
That way, even if you were being inattentive at the wheel, the Levante is able to pick up the slack with a technologically advanced safety system that’s been designed just for that purpose.
